Psyche, minor planet designation 16 Psyche, is a large asteroid located in the Asteroid Belt. It was discovered by Annibale de Gasparis on March 17, 1852. It is named after Psyche, the goddess of the soul in Greek Mythology.
Physical Characteristics
Psyche has a diameter of approximately 226 Km (140.43 Mi). It has a magnitude of 6.21 with an albedo of 0.1203. Psyche is an M-Type asteroid, with the spectral type of M according to the Tholen classification system, and X according to the SMASS classification system.[1]
Orbit
Psyche is located 2.924 AU from the Sun on average, coming as close as 2.53 AU and as far as 3.32 AU. Psyche orbits the Sun every 1,830 days (5.01 years). It has an eccentricity of 0.1342 with an inclination of 3.10 degrees.[1]
Exploration
Psyche will be explored by a spacecraft of the same name, marking the first time a man-made object that will journey to a metallic asteroid. The probe was launched on October 13, 2023[2] by NASA’s discovery program, with an expected arrival date in August of 2029.[3] It would orbit for ~21 months, before eventually ending its mission.
