Kalliope, minor planet designation 22 Kalliope, is a large asteroid located in the Asteroid Belt. It was discovered by John Russel Hind on November 16, 1852. It is named after Calliope, the Greek Muse of epic poetry.
Physical Characteristics[]
Kalliope has a diameter of approximately 167.54 Km (104.105 Mi). It has a magnitude of 6.82 with an albedo of 0.166. Kalliope is an M-Type asteroid, with the spectral type of M according to the Tholen classification system, and X according to the SMASS classification system.[1]
Orbit[]
Kalliope is located 2.911 AU from the Sun on average, coming as close as 2.62 AU and as far as 3.20 AU. Kalliope orbits the Sun every 1,810 days (4.96 years). It has an eccentricity of 0.0987 with an inclination of 13.70 degrees.[1]
Satellite[]
22 Kalliope has one known natural satellite, Linus. Linus is approximately 28 km in diameter. It was discovered on August 29, 2001, by astronomers Jean-Luc Margot and Michael E. Brown via the Keck telescope in Hawaii, United States.
Linus was given the name S/2001 (22) 1 until the International Astronomical Union gave Linus its current name in July 2003. Linus shares mostly the same characteristics as its parent, Lalliope.
