The asteroid belt, the place where most asteroids lie.
Asteroids are bodies of rock, ice, and other materials that are not classified as Planets, Dwarf Planets, Comets, or Moons, but still orbit the sun. They usually reside in the asteroid belt, although some can be in between the orbits of planets.
Groups of Asteroids[]
- Vulcanoids - A hypothetical group of asteroids that would reside in the Vulcanoid belt.
- Near-Earth asteroids - Asteroids that orbit the sun near Earth.
- Main-belt asteroids - Asteroids in the asteroid belt.
- Crossing Asteroids - Asteroids that cross/intersect the orbit of a planet (most commonly Mars)
- Trojans - Asteroids that share an orbit with another planet (Orbit within the Lagrange points).
- Centaurs - Asteroids that are in between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus.
- Damocloids - Objects that are asteroids, but exhibit comet-like characteristics.
