A Resonant Trans-Neptunian Object is a specific type of celestial object that orbits the Sun beyond Neptune's orbit and is in a resonant orbital relationship with Neptune. This means that the object's orbital period is related to Neptune's orbital period in a specific ratio, causing periodic gravitational interactions between the two bodies.
The most common resonant orbits involve integer ratios of orbital periods, such as 1:2, 2:3, or 3:4, meaning that for every one orbit Neptune completes, the resonant TNO completes a certain number of orbits. For example, if a TNO is in a 2:3 resonance with Neptune, it completes two orbits around the Sun for every three orbits Neptune completes.
One of the most well-known examples of a resonant TNO is Pluto, which is in a 2:3 resonance with Neptune. Other resonant TNOs include members of the plutinos (objects in a 2:3 resonance), twotinos (objects in a 1:2 resonance), and other resonant groups.
Resonant TNOs are important objects for understanding the dynamical history and evolution of the outer Solar System. Their resonant orbits can provide insights into past gravitational interactions and orbital migrations during the early stages of the Solar System's formation.
