Triton's Binary Partner is a hypothetical object that is one of the possible causes for Triton’s retrograde orbit and capture. The theory is that Triton may have been in a system with another Kuiper belt object (KBO) around 4 billion years ago. When Neptune captured Triton, the other object got ejected. It is currently unknown what the properties of the binary partner are, but it is thought that it is similar to Triton, except smaller and possibly less massive.
